DEI Outreach Support Program

Academic BINA members who are interested in sharing their love of microscopy with young scientists, in particular those from underrepresented groups, can request financial assistance to host an outreach event at their Institution. Event organizers will need to demonstrate that participants from traditionally underrepresented groups from any level (e.g. grade school, undergraduate, graduate) will be participating in the event, with a view to increasing diversity of future imaging scientists. Members can apply for up to $500 USD to help defray costs of the event. It is largely at the discretion of the organizers* as to how the funds may be utilized and organizers should present a case for alignment of their event goals with BINA’s mission and values.

Your efforts to support diversity and inclusion in your event planning will be considered in the evaluation process.

*NOTE: Event funds cannot be used to purchase alcoholic beverages or provide prizes. If you have questions or concerns about other possible restrictions on how these funds can be used please contact us.

In exchange for BINA support, BINA requires at a minimum:

1. the BINA logo should be placed on the event flyer and/or website acknowledging support,
   and
2. A post-event report provided within a month of completion, with the following event-related participant demographic included, while maintaining participant anonymity;
   • Total number of participants,
   • Geographic home/regions of participants,
   • Whether they self-identify as part of an underrepresented group in STEM
   • What the BINA support ultimately covered

If helpful, the BINA administrative team can assist with this data collection by sharing the types of questions we ask our own event participants, when we share the logo materials.

Applications for DEI Outreach Support will be accepted on a rolling basis by submitting this form at least 2 months in advance of the event start date.

#NOTE: The BINA website and BINA membership is restricted to persons 18 years and old. Organizers should specify this if attendees are under 18 years of age.
